Adaptive, Compassionate Dental Care for Every Child — Autism, ADHD, Sensory Sensitivities, and Medical Complexity

Every child deserves to feel safe and respected at the dentist. At Dental Care Kids, we specifically train our team in special needs pediatric dentistry — adapting our techniques, environment, communication, and sedation options to meet each child exactly where they are. Families throughout Fairfield County bring their children to us because we don’t ask kids to fit into our routine; we build the routine around them.

1500 Summer Street, 2nd Floor, Stamford, CT 06905 | Call (203) 324-6171 to discuss your child’s needs

Who We Serve

Our special needs pediatric dentistry program welcomes children with:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) — including children with significant sensory sensitivities, communication differences, or behavioral challenges
  • ADHD — children for whom sitting still, transitions, or focus during dental visits is difficult
  • Sensory Processing Disorder — sensitivity to sounds, lights, textures, or touch
  • Down Syndrome and other developmental conditions
  • Cerebral Palsy — physical adaptations, positioning, communication considerations
  • Hearing or vision impairment — we adapt our approach accordingly
  • Medical complexity — children with chronic illness, feeding tubes, immune conditions, cardiac history
  • Anxiety disorders, PTSD, or trauma histories affecting medical/dental care
  • Behavioral or emotional differences of any kind

If your child has a diagnosis, condition, or situation we haven’t listed — call us anyway. We’ve likely worked with something similar, and we’re always willing to learn.

Our Approach

We Listen First

Before your child’s first appointment, we talk with you — sometimes at length — about what helps and what doesn’t. What triggers anxiety? What soothes it? What have other providers done well? What hasn’t worked? You are the expert on your child. Our job is to learn from you and adapt.

Desensitization Visits

For many special needs children, we recommend a “happy visit” before any treatment — just a chance to meet the team, explore the chair, try on the sunglasses, get a balloon, and leave. No clinical work. We build trust before we build a treatment plan.

Sensory Accommodations

  • Dim or adjustable lighting for light-sensitive patients
  • Weighted blankets or familiar comfort items welcomed
  • Noise-canceling headphones or music through the patient’s own device
  • Advance notice of sounds (the suction, the polisher) before they start
  • Breaks as often as needed — we never rush
  • Extended appointment times — booked specifically so we can move at your child’s pace

Communication Adaptations

  • Visual supports — photos, picture schedules, social stories for what to expect
  • Sign language or alternative communication — tell us what works
  • Structured predictability — same chair, same team, same sequence when possible
  • Direct, concrete language — no dental jargon

Positioning and Physical Adaptations

  • Papoose or stabilizing support ONLY when specifically appropriate and consented to by parents
  • Wheelchair-accessible treatment rooms
  • Support pillows and positioning aids
  • Parent-in-chair for children who need a parent’s physical presence

Sedation as a Compassionate Option

For children whose needs make awake dental treatment impossible or traumatic, sedation is often the kindest choice — not the scariest. We offer:

Our goal with every sedation decision is completing needed dental care safely and humanely — not forcing a child through an awake experience that will traumatize them.

Care Coordination with Your Child’s Team

Many of our special needs patients have a broader care team — pediatrician, specialists, therapists, school staff. We’re happy to coordinate with any of them at your request. This may include:

  • Sharing records with your child’s medical team
  • Consulting with your pediatrician before sedation or complex procedures
  • Writing letters for school accommodations or insurance authorization
  • Coordinating with therapists on desensitization strategies

Ask at booking or any appointment — we build care coordination into our practice.

What a First Visit Looks Like

We design first visits for special needs children around your child, not a standard checklist. A typical first visit might include:

  1. Extended intake conversation with parents, often before the visit starts
  2. A tour of the office — chair, lights, instruments, treatment room
  3. A social story or visual schedule for what will happen next
  4. A gentle, partial exam as the child is comfortable — we don’t push past your child’s tolerance
  5. A celebration — balloon, prize, and a feeling of success
  6. A plan for follow-up visits that build on what worked

For some children, we don’t attempt a full exam or cleaning at the first visit. That’s completely fine. Our goal is a positive experience that builds toward the full dental care your child needs over time.

Building a Dental Home That Works for Your Family

We know how exhausting it can be to find providers who understand your child. The appointments that go wrong. The offices that don’t have time. The specialists who say “we don’t do that here.” We want to be the opposite of that experience.

If your child has special needs of any kind, call us and tell us about them. We’ll listen, ask questions, and plan the right first step.

✓ Got Questions?

Common Parent Questions

“My child can’t sit still. Can you still see them?”

Absolutely. We adapt our approach constantly. For some kids, we spread treatment across multiple short visits. For others, sedation is the right call. We’ll work with you to find what fits.

“My child is nonverbal. How will this work?”

Many of our special needs patients are nonverbal or have limited verbal communication. Tell us how your child communicates — gestures, devices, specific behaviors. We’ll adapt to them.

“My child has a severe fear of medical/dental settings.”

This is very common — often connected to past difficult experiences. We often recommend a slow desensitization approach: short “happy visits” that build gradually toward clinical work. Sedation is available whenever it’s the right call.

“Can I stay with my child?”

Always, for any special needs appointment. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to be in the chair room as long as it helps.

“My child needs extensive dental work — can we do everything at once?”

Often, yes. For children whose needs make repeated awake visits impossible, we frequently recommend IV sedation or general anesthesia to complete all needed work in a single visit. This is often the most humane option.

“We’ve had bad experiences elsewhere. How is this different?”

We hear this often. Our entire model is built around the child, not the schedule. Extended appointment times, desensitization visits, sensory accommodations, and full sedation options are standard — not exceptions. Many of our patients came to us after difficult experiences at general pediatric dental offices.

“Is my child too complicated for a general pediatric practice?”

Possibly — and that’s OK. If your child’s needs are outside what a typical pediatric office can safely accommodate, we’re glad to take over care. Our specialty training, sedation capabilities, and adaptive approach are built for exactly this.

“What does this cost?”

Care costs the same as our standard pediatric services — we don’t charge more for special needs accommodations. Sedation fees vary by type. Insurance and CareCredit / Cherry financing apply the same way. We’ll provide clear estimates before any treatment.
