What is General Anesthesia?

General anesthesia uses IV medications and inhaled gases to produce a state of complete unconsciousness. Your child is fully asleep, not responsive to stimuli, and receives airway support — typically a breathing tube placed once they’re asleep. A board-certified anesthesiologist administers and monitors the anesthesia throughout the entire procedure while our pediatric dental team performs the treatment.

This is the same level of anesthesia used for many other pediatric surgeries. In dentistry, it allows us to perform extensive work — sometimes an entire mouth of restorations — in one single visit, with zero distress for the child.

When General Anesthesia is the Right Choice

How General Anesthesia Works

Before the Procedure

The Day of Surgery

1. Arrival at the surgical facility, pre-op registration
2. Meet with the anesthesiologist for final review
3. Your child changes into a hospital gown
4. Parents typically accompany the child until induction (exact policies vary by facility)
5. Anesthesia is induced (usually via gas mask first, then IV)
6. Once your child is asleep, the dental team begins treatment
7. Continuous monitoring throughout by the anesthesia team: heart rate, oxygen, blood pressure, ECG, end-tidal CO2
8. Treatment completed — often 1–3 hours depending on scope
9. Anesthesia is reversed and your child is moved to recovery
10. Parents are reunited with the child shortly after wake-up

After Surgery

• Recovery monitoring at the surgical facility — typically 1–2 hours
• Discharge home once your child is alert and stable
• Full rest for the remainder of the day — no activity, soft diet
• A parent must stay with the child overnight
• Written post-op instructions and 24/7 contact numbers sent home
