Stop Cavities Before They Start — Fluoride Treatments and Dental Sealants
Two of the most effective, best-researched tools in pediatric dentistry are fluoride treatments and dental sealants. Together, they can prevent the vast majority of childhood cavities — protecting your child’s teeth during the highest-risk years. At Dental Care Kids, both are part of our standard preventive care for kids in Stamford and across Fairfield County.

Fluoride Treatments
What is Fluoride?
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that strengthens tooth enamel and helps teeth resist decay. It works two ways:
- Remineralization — fluoride rebuilds enamel that’s been weakened by acid attacks from bacteria
- Prevention — fluoride makes enamel more acid-resistant, reducing the chance of future cavities
Why Kids Especially Benefit
Children’s new permanent teeth (which start erupting around age 6) have enamel that’s still maturing. For the first few years after a tooth erupts, the enamel is more vulnerable to decay. Professional fluoride treatment during this window dramatically reduces cavity risk.
How It Works at Dental Care Kids
During cleanings, we apply professional-strength fluoride varnish to the teeth. The process takes about one minute:
- Teeth are dried
- Varnish is painted on with a small brush
- Your child picks a flavor (bubblegum, mint, strawberry)
- They avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes — that’s it
The fluoride is absorbed into the enamel over the next few hours, strengthening the teeth for months.
How Often?
We recommend fluoride treatments at every 6-month visit for most children ages 2–18. Children at higher cavity risk may benefit from more frequent application. Your pediatric dentist will make a recommendation based on your child’s risk factors.
Is Fluoride Safe?
Yes — when used at recommended doses. Professional fluoride varnish has been used for decades with an excellent safety record. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Dental Association, and American Academy of Pediatrics all recommend topical fluoride for children. If you have concerns, we’re happy to discuss them — just ask at your child’s visit.
Dental Sealants
What are Dental Sealants?
Dental sealants are thin, tooth-colored protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of molars. Molars have natural deep grooves and pits that trap food and bacteria — and are almost impossible to clean completely with a toothbrush, no matter how thoroughly your child brushes. Sealants fill these grooves with a smooth, durable barrier.
Why Sealants Matter
Research from the CDC shows that sealants reduce cavities on treated teeth by up to 80% over the first 2 years and continue to provide significant protection for years after. They are one of the most effective cavity-prevention tools ever developed.
Who Should Get Sealants?
We typically recommend sealants for:
- First permanent molars (erupting around age 6)
- Second permanent molars (erupting around age 12)
- Baby molars for some higher-risk children
- Deeply grooved premolars on a case-by-case basis
How Sealants are Applied
The process is painless, takes about 5–10 minutes per tooth, and requires no drilling or injections:
- The tooth is cleaned and dried
- A mild solution is applied to help the sealant bond
- The tooth is rinsed and dried again
- The sealant material is painted into the grooves
- A special blue light hardens the sealant in seconds
- Done — your child can eat and drink normally right away
How Long Do Sealants Last?
Sealants typically last 5–10 years with normal wear. We check them at every cleaning visit and can easily re-apply or repair if needed.
Are Sealants Covered by Insurance?
Most dental insurance plans cover sealants on permanent molars for children. We’ll verify your benefits before treatment. Learn more about insurance and financing.
How Fluoride and Sealants Work Together
- Fluoride strengthens the enamel of every tooth in your child’s mouth
- Sealants create a physical barrier on the grooves where brushing can’t reach
Together, they address the two biggest vulnerabilities for childhood cavities. Kids who receive regular fluoride and sealants have dramatically fewer cavities throughout childhood than kids who don’t.
What Parents Can Do at Home
Professional preventive care is powerful — but it works best alongside strong home habits:
- Brush twice a day with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste (rice-grain-sized for children under 3)
- Floss daily — especially between molars
- Limit sugary drinks and snacks — especially sticky sweets, juice, and soda
- Drink fluoridated tap water when available
- Replace toothbrushes every 3 months
- Schedule twice-yearly cleanings at Dental Care Kids (book here)
