Gentle, Kid-Friendly Cleanings That Build a Lifetime of Healthy Smiles

Twice-yearly dental cleanings and exams are the single most important thing you can do for your child’s long-term oral health. At Dental Care Kids, every cleaning is performed by a specialty-trained pediatric hygienist using gentle techniques, kid-friendly flavors, and an approach built around making your child feel proud — not scared.

What is a Pediatric Dental Cleaning?

A pediatric dental cleaning (sometimes called a prophylaxis or “prophy”) removes plaque and tartar buildup from your child’s teeth, polishes them smooth, and gives one of our pediatric dentists a clear view for a thorough exam. Cleanings are recommended every 6 months for most children starting around age 2 — earlier if there’s buildup or concern.

Unlike adult cleanings, pediatric cleanings use softer tools, smaller instruments, and flavored pastes (strawberry, bubblegum, mint, grape — your child chooses). Everything is scaled to a child’s mouth and comfort level.

What Happens During a Cleaning & Exam Visit

A typical appointment at Dental Care Kids takes about 30–45 minutes and includes:

1. Warm Welcome (5 min)

Check-in with our front-desk team. For younger kids, this usually includes a hello, a favorite book, and a balloon to hold.

2. Chair Time (5 min)

Your child meets their hygienist, takes a seat in the “spaceship chair” (with TVs on the ceiling above), and gets a preview of what’s about to happen using our “show, tell, do” method.

3. The Cleaning (15 min)

  • Plaque and tartar removal with gentle pediatric tools
  • Polishing with flavored prophy paste
  • Flossing — and a demo so your child can try it on their own
  • Fluoride treatment — strengthens enamel

4. The Exam (10 min)

One of our board-certified pediatric dentists performs a thorough exam: - Cavity check on every tooth - Evaluation of gum health - Review of bite and developing dentition - Orthodontic screen (are baby teeth making room for permanent teeth?) - Check for signs of grinding, thumb-sucking issues, or other habits

5. Parent Conversation (5 min)

We review findings with the parent, answer questions, demonstrate home care techniques if needed, and schedule any follow-up treatment.

6. Celebration (2 min)

Prize, balloon, goodie bag with a new toothbrush, floss, and toothpaste. Your child leaves feeling proud of how they did.

Why Twice-Yearly Cleanings Matter for Kids

Prevention is dramatically cheaper than treatment. A cleaning costs less than a filling. A filling costs less than a crown. A crown costs less than sedation for extensive treatment. Staying ahead of decay is the single most cost-effective thing you can do.

Habits form early. Kids who grow up associating the dentist with positive, unhurried visits develop a completely different relationship with oral health than kids who only come in for emergencies. Research shows that children who start regular dental visits by age 2 are more likely to have healthier teeth throughout life.

Early detection changes outcomes. Cavities caught small can often be treated with a simple filling or even remineralized with fluoride. Cavities caught late often require crowns or pulpotomies.

Kids are growing. Their bite, jaw, and eruption patterns change constantly. Twice-yearly visits let us catch orthodontic, developmental, or habit concerns early — and coordinate with Dental Care Orthodontics next door if needed.

When Should My Child’s Cleaning Visits Start?

First visit: by age 1 — or within 6 months of the first tooth erupting (per American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry). Early visits are usually brief — a lap exam, a quick look, parent education. Formal cleanings typically begin around age 2–3.

Ongoing: every 6 months for most children. Some children at higher cavity risk may need visits every 3–4 months. Your pediatric dentist will recommend what’s right for your child.

Digital X-Rays

When clinically needed, we use low-dose digital X-rays to check for cavities between teeth, monitor tooth development, or evaluate injury. Our digital imaging uses up to 75% less radiation than traditional film X-rays, and images appear instantly on a screen — no waiting, no chemical processing.

We follow strict ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) radiation safety protocols and only take X-rays when there’s a clinical reason. Learn more about our imaging technology.

If Your Child is Nervous About Cleanings

Some kids are excited for cleanings. Others are nervous — especially first-timers or children with past negative experiences. We handle this with:

  • Unhurried, patient approach — we go at your child’s pace
  • “Show, tell, do” for every tool and technique
  • Nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) for children who benefit from mild sedation
  • Adaptive techniques for children with autism, ADHD, or sensory sensitivities

Tell us when you book if your child needs extra support. We’ll plan the visit around it.

What It Costs

Most dental insurance plans cover 100% of preventive cleanings and exams. For self-pay families or those with limited coverage, we offer transparent pricing and financing through CareCredit and Cherry.

✓ Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a pediatric cleaning take?

About 30–45 minutes for a typical cleaning and exam. First-time visits for very young children may be shorter — focused on acclimation rather than a full cleaning.

Will my child need X-rays at every visit?

No. We take X-rays only when clinically needed — typically every 12–24 months for low-risk patients, more often for higher-risk kids. We follow strict radiation safety protocols using low-dose digital imaging.

What if my child has a cavity?

We’ll explain the findings, show you on a screen if possible, and discuss treatment options — usually a simple tooth-colored filling. For deeper cavities, we may recommend a pediatric crown or pulpotomy. We never recommend treatment that isn’t clinically needed.

How often should my child come in?

Every 6 months for most kids. Children at higher cavity risk (braces, deep grooves, medical conditions) may need visits every 3–4 months.

Can I stay with my child during the cleaning?

Always welcome for younger children. For older children (6+), many parents find their kids do better solo — it builds confidence and independence. We follow your lead.
