The Crown Procedure at Dental Care Kids

Most pediatric crowns are completed in a single appointment. Here’s what to expect:

1. Pre-Treatment Review

We walk your child through what will happen using our “show, tell, do” method. Any questions you have, we answer now.

2. Numbing and (Optional) Sedation

Local anesthetic is used to fully numb the area. For longer procedures, anxious kids, or combining multiple treatments, we may recommend:

• Nitrous oxide for mild relaxation
• Oral sedation for moderate anxiety
• IV sedation or general anesthesia for extensive work or very young patients

3. Tooth Preparation

The decay or damage is removed, and the tooth is gently shaped to fit the crown — similar to a filling, but more of the tooth is prepared to accept a crown.

4. Fitting and Placement

• Stainless steel crowns come in pre-sized options and are fit directly onto the tooth
• Ceramic crowns may require a quick shaping adjustment
• The crown is cemented in place

• Any excess cement is removed

5. Celebrate

Balloon, prize, and your child walks out with a fully restored tooth. Total appointment time: usually 45–60 minutes.

After the Crown is Placed

• Normal function returns within a few hours once numbness wears off
• Soft foods for the first day — sticky or very hard foods can loosen a new crown
• Normal brushing and flossing — gentle around the gum line
• Avoid chewing on pens, ice, or hard candy — these can damage any crown

When a Baby Tooth is Crowned, Then Falls Out
