What happens during a crown visit?

One appointment, start to finish. No temporary crown and no second trip.

    Removing decay + shaping

Will the stainless steel crown affect my child’s appearance?
It’s silver and visible — most parents are fine with that for back teeth, since they’re rarely seen. For front teeth, we use tooth-colored ceramic to match the natural smile.
How long does a pediatric crown last?
Baby tooth crowns last until the tooth falls out naturally — usually 4–10 years depending on the tooth. Crowns on permanent teeth can last decades with proper care.
Will my child’s gums be sore?
Mild tenderness for 1–2 days is normal after placement. This usually resolves with soft foods and age-appropriate pain relief if needed.
Can a crown come loose?
Rarely. If a crown does come off, save it and call us — we can often re-cement it. Never glue it back yourself.
Is a pulpotomy always needed before a crown?
Not always. A crown is used when there’s too much damage for a filling; a pulpotomy is needed only if the cavity has reached the nerve. Some cases need both; others need only a crown.
Will insurance cover the crown?
Most plans cover pediatric crowns — usually at 50% after deductible. Learn about insurance and financing.
Are zirconia crowns safe for kids?
Yes. Zirconia is biocompatible, metal-free, and extensively used in pediatric and adult dentistry. It’s the gold standard for tooth-colored pediatric crowns.
My child is terrified — can we still do this?
Absolutely. We regularly place crowns with sedation support — from light nitrous through general anesthesia depending on need.
