The Gentlest, Most Common Sedation — For Nervous Kids Who Need a Little Extra Help

Nitrous oxide — sometimes called “laughing gas” — is the lightest and most commonly used sedation in pediatric dentistry. It’s safe, effective, wears off within minutes, and helps nervous children relax enough to get through dental appointments comfortably. At Dental Care Kids, we offer nitrous oxide as part of our full sedation dentistry program — and it’s often the first option we recommend for children with mild to moderate dental anxiety.

What is Nitrous Oxide?

Nitrous oxide is a colorless, odorless gas that, when mixed with oxygen and breathed through a small nose mask, produces a mild, relaxed feeling. Kids often describe it as “floaty” or “giggly” — hence the nickname “laughing gas.”

Unlike deeper sedation, nitrous oxide:

  • Keeps your child fully awake and responsive
  • Kicks in within 3–5 minutes of starting
  • Wears off within 3–5 minutes of stopping
  • Leaves no lingering drowsiness — kids can return to school the same day

Nitrous has been used safely in pediatric dentistry for over 50 years and is recognized by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry as a safe, effective sedation option for appropriate patients.

When Nitrous Oxide is a Great Fit

  • Mild to moderate dental anxiety — nervous kids who need help relaxing
  • Gag reflex that makes exams or cleanings difficult
  • Longer appointments — multiple procedures in one visit
  • First-time patients who are nervous but cooperative
  • Children with sensory sensitivities who benefit from a calmer, more relaxed state
  • Older children who understand the mask and can breathe through the nose

Nitrous is not usually the right choice for: - Children with respiratory conditions like severe asthma - Children with nasal congestion on the day of the appointment - Children who refuse to wear the nose mask - Very young children (under 3) who may not cooperate with the mask - Procedures requiring deeper sedation (see our full sedation options)

How Nitrous Oxide Works at Dental Care Kids

Before the Appointment

  • No fasting required — your child can eat a light meal 2 hours before
  • Bring your child in comfortable clothing — loose layers
  • Let us know about any recent illness — congestion or respiratory issues may affect the plan

During the Appointment

  1. Your child climbs into the “spaceship chair”
  2. A small, soft nose mask is placed — your child picks a flavor (strawberry, bubblegum, mint)
  3. We start with 100% oxygen for a minute or two, then introduce the nitrous oxide
  4. Within a few minutes, your child feels calm, relaxed, sometimes giggly
  5. Treatment proceeds — cleanings, fillings, or whatever is planned
  6. When treatment is complete, we switch back to 100% oxygen for 3–5 minutes
  7. The nitrous is fully out of your child’s system; we remove the mask

After the Appointment

  • No lingering effects — your child is back to normal within minutes
  • No dietary restrictions (other than normal post-treatment guidance)
  • Normal activities — school, play, sports all fine
  • No driving restrictions for parents — your child can simply go home

✓ Got Questions?

What Parents Often Ask

Is it safe?

Yes — when administered by trained pediatric specialists with continuous monitoring. Nitrous oxide has decades of safety data in pediatric dentistry. At Dental Care Kids, we use modern equipment with automatic oxygen safety thresholds, continuous monitoring, and trained staff supervising every moment.

Will my child be “knocked out”?

No. Nitrous is a conscious sedation — your child is fully awake, aware, and able to talk and respond. It just helps them feel relaxed instead of anxious.

What does it feel like?

Kids often describe it as “warm,” “floaty,” “like a tingly feeling in my arms and legs,” or “fuzzy.” Many say they feel like they’re watching the appointment from far away. Most kids enjoy the sensation.

Will my child remember the appointment?

Usually yes — nitrous doesn’t cause amnesia the way deeper sedation does. Your child may remember the visit but feel like it passed quickly.

What are the side effects?

Nitrous oxide is generally very well tolerated. Rare side effects include mild nausea (especially if a child ate a heavy meal before the appointment) or a brief headache. These resolve quickly.

Can my child eat before the appointment?

A light meal 2 hours before is fine. We recommend avoiding heavy or greasy foods immediately before the visit to reduce the rare chance of nausea.

Is nitrous covered by insurance?

Sometimes. Coverage varies by plan. We’ll verify your benefits before treatment. Learn about insurance and financing.

What if my child doesn’t like the mask?

No problem. We always do a “mask test” first — letting your child hold and try on the mask with no gas. If they can’t tolerate it, we switch to another sedation option like oral sedation.
