Oral sedation is a flavored liquid your child drinks in the office before treatment. They stay awake and responsive, but relaxed enough that a longer or more involved appointment becomes manageable.

What oral sedation involves

Simple to give, closely watched throughout.

    A flavored liquid your child drinks 30-45 minutes before treatment. No needles.

Oral sedation does require fasting beforehand. We will send you exact instructions when the visit is booked.

Will my child be asleep?
Not fully asleep, but drowsy and relaxed. They’ll often drift in and out of light sleep and may appear to be napping during the procedure. They remain responsive to voice and touch.
Will my child remember the appointment?
Usually not clearly. Oral sedation often produces amnesia around the procedure — most kids remember drinking the medication but have fuzzy or absent memories of the treatment itself.
What are the side effects?
Temporary drowsiness, mild nausea in some cases, and occasionally brief mood changes during wake-up. Serious side effects are rare with proper dosing and monitoring.
What if my child refuses the medication?
We do our best to make it palatable (sweet flavors, offered through a favorite cup). If your child truly won’t drink it, we’ll switch to another option — typically nitrous for shorter procedures or IV sedation for longer ones.
Can my child eat after?
Start with clear liquids first (water, clear juice), then soft foods once they’re fully alert. Avoid hot foods for a few hours. We’ll send home specific instructions based on the treatment performed.
Does insurance cover oral sedation?
Coverage varies widely. Some plans cover sedation for medically necessary cases; others don’t. We’ll verify benefits and provide a cost estimate before treatment. Learn about financing.
