What happens during an extraction visit?

Planned in advance, and nothing starts before your child is fully numb.

Consult + X-rays

We confirm the tooth, the roots, and the plan before the day.

Show, tell, do intro

Every instrument gets a demo before it is used.

Numbing + sedation

Numbing gel first, with nitrous or deeper sedation if it is the plan.

Gentle extraction

Usually 10-20 minutes. Pressure is normal; pain is not.

Gauze + rest

A short rest with gauze in place until the bleeding settles.

We go through eating, rinsing, and what to watch for before you leave.

Will it hurt?

Not with proper numbing. Most kids feel pressure but no pain during the extraction. Mild soreness for a day or two afterward is normal.

How long does recovery take?

Most kids are back to normal within 1–3 days. Wisdom tooth extractions typically take longer — 3–5 days for teens.

Does my child need a space maintainer?

Often yes — if a baby tooth is extracted early (before the permanent tooth is close to erupting). Your pediatric dentist will recommend based on age, tooth position, and X-rays.

When should we consider wisdom teeth?

Typically between ages 15–18 — when roots have formed enough for cleaner extraction but before problems develop. Most teens do best with wisdom teeth removed proactively, before they cause infection or crowding.

Who performs wisdom tooth extractions at Dental Care Kids?

Dr. Jonathan Cohen, our oral and maxillofacial surgeon. He completed five years of hospital-based surgical residency at a Level One Trauma Center and holds active BLS and ACLS certifications.

Can siblings get extractions the same day?

Yes — we often coordinate family appointments. Let us know at scheduling.

Will insurance cover the extraction?

Most plans cover medically necessary extractions — usually 70–80% for simple extractions, 50% for surgical extractions. Wisdom tooth removal is often covered similarly. Learn more.

What if my child is terrified?

We’ve got it covered. Every level of sedation is available for kids who need help getting through an extraction — from nitrous to general anesthesia.

Can I stay with my child?

Yes, for most extractions. For IV sedation or general anesthesia cases, you’ll wait nearby during the procedure but reunite immediately afterward.
