Same-Day Appointments for Dental Emergencies — Because Kids’ Teeth Don’t Wait
A knocked-out tooth at soccer practice. A fractured front tooth from a bike fall. Severe tooth pain that’s keeping your child awake. Dental emergencies are scary — for both kids and parents — but they’re almost always treatable with prompt care. At Dental Care Kids, we reserve space in every day’s schedule for same-day emergency appointments, so your child can be seen quickly by a board-certified pediatric specialist when it matters most.
Call (203) 324-6171 immediately for dental emergencies during office hours. 1500 Summer Street, 2nd Floor, Stamford, CT 06905
What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
Call us right away — or go to the nearest emergency room for life-threatening situations — if your child has:
True Dental Emergencies (Call Us First)
- Knocked-out permanent tooth — time-critical, best outcomes within 30–60 minutes
- Fractured or broken tooth — especially if a large portion is missing
- Severe tooth pain keeping your child from sleeping or eating
- Abscess — visible swelling, pus, or a bump on the gum
- Tooth pushed out of position or loosened by trauma
- Uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth after injury
- Severe bite or laceration to tongue, cheek, or lip
- Broken orthodontic appliance causing pain
Go to the ER First
- Severe facial trauma — jaw injury, broken facial bones, possible concussion
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Heavy, uncontrolled bleeding that won’t slow after 15 minutes of pressure
- Severe facial swelling affecting breathing or vision
After ER care, call us to coordinate follow-up dental treatment.
What to Do in the First 5 Minutes
Knocked-Out Permanent Tooth
Time matters enormously — reimplantation within 30–60 minutes has the best outcomes.
- Find the tooth — handle it by the crown (the top), not the root
- Rinse gently with milk or saline — do NOT scrub
- Try to place it back in the socket if your child is old enough to hold it there gently
- If that’s not possible: store it in milk, saline, or your child’s own saliva (pocket of the cheek if they won’t swallow it)
- Call us immediately — we’ll see you within minutes
Knocked-Out Baby Tooth
Do not try to reimplant a baby tooth — it can damage the permanent tooth developing underneath. Call us so we can evaluate the socket and check for other damage.
Fractured Tooth
- Rinse the mouth with warm water
- Save any broken fragments in milk or water if possible
- Apply a cold compress to the face to reduce swelling
- Call us for a same-day appointment
Severe Toothache
- Rinse with warm salt water
- Gently floss to remove any food caught between teeth
- Cold compress on the outside of the cheek
- Age-appropriate pain relief (ibuprofen is usually best for dental pain)
- Do NOT place aspirin directly on the gum — it can cause chemical burns
- Call us — persistent severe pain usually means we need to see your child
Facial or Mouth Injury with Swelling
- Cold compress on the face
- Control bleeding with gentle pressure using clean gauze or a cloth
- Call us — or go to the ER for significant injuries
What We Treat in Emergency Appointments
Our same-day emergency slots handle:
- Dental trauma — knocked-out, loosened, displaced, or fractured teeth
- Severe dental pain — diagnosing cause (usually decay reaching the nerve, abscess, or infection)
- Abscess drainage and antibiotic prescription where needed
- Urgent extractions for severely compromised teeth
- Urgent pulpotomies to save damaged teeth
- Crown replacement if one has come off
- Broken appliance repair — space maintainers, partial dentures, orthodontic appliances (we coordinate with Dental Care Orthodontics next door for orthodontic emergencies)
- Post-op complications — if something’s not healing right after treatment
How Same-Day Appointments Work
During office hours (see below): - Call (203) 324-6171 immediately - Describe the emergency to our front desk team - We’ll give you triage advice and schedule the earliest available slot — often within the hour for true emergencies
Outside office hours: - Call the main number — the voicemail provides emergency instructions - For severe pain or trauma that can’t wait until morning, proceed to your nearest ER and contact us the next business day - We’ll follow up quickly to coordinate any needed dental care

Preventing Future Dental Emergencies
Most pediatric dental emergencies involve sports, playground accidents, or untreated decay. A few simple prevention steps can dramatically reduce risk:
Sports Mouth Guards
Any child playing contact sports should wear a mouth guard. Dental injuries in basketball, soccer, hockey, lacrosse, and martial arts are common — and almost all are preventable with a properly fitted guard. We make custom mouth guards at Dental Care Kids that fit better, breathe better, and protect better than store-bought options.
Regular Preventive Visits
Regular cleanings and exams catch small problems before they become emergencies. Toothaches from untreated decay are among the most common dental emergencies — and are almost always preventable.
Safety at Home
- Childproof sharp edges at toddler level
- Use a car seat for every ride
- Supervise near stairs, pools, and play structures
- Teach older kids not to chew ice, hard candy, or pens
