Gentle, Tooth-Colored Fillings for Kids — With Sedation When Needed
When your child has a cavity, a dental filling is the standard treatment to remove the decay and restore the tooth. At Dental Care Kids, we use tooth-colored composite fillings that blend naturally with your child’s tooth, and we pair them with age-appropriate techniques — behavior guidance, nitrous oxide, or deeper sedation when needed — so even the smallest patient can get the care they need comfortably.

What is a Dental Filling?
A dental filling repairs a cavity by removing the decayed portion of the tooth and filling the space with a durable restorative material. Left untreated, even small cavities grow — often leading to pulpotomies, crowns, or extractions. A timely filling is the simplest, least expensive way to save a tooth.
Types of Fillings We Use
Tooth-Colored Composite Fillings (Our Standard)
Made from a mixture of plastic and fine glass particles, composite fillings are:
- Matched to your child’s tooth color — virtually invisible
- Bonded directly to the tooth — requires less drilling than older silver fillings
- Durable — lasting many years with proper care
- Metal-free and BPA-free options available — ask us
- Ideal for both baby and permanent teeth
Composite is our standard choice for pediatric fillings because it’s aesthetic, conservative, and safe. We don’t use amalgam (silver) fillings unless a family specifically requests them.
Glass Ionomer Fillings (For Specific Cases)
Glass ionomer is another tooth-colored option used mainly for:
- Very young children where composite placement is difficult
- Baby teeth with moderate-risk patients — glass ionomer releases fluoride over time, adding protection against future decay
- Specific tooth locations or clinical situations
Your pediatric dentist will recommend the best material for each tooth.
The Filling Procedure at Dental Care Kids
1. Show, Tell, Do Introduction
Before any treatment, we walk your child through exactly what will happen using age-appropriate language. No surprises.
2. Gentle Numbing
For larger fillings or deeper cavities, we use topical gel first (to numb the gum) and then a small injection of local anesthetic. For smaller surface cavities, numbing may not be needed. We use techniques that minimize discomfort: the smallest effective needle, buffered anesthetic, slow delivery.
3. Sedation When Needed
For very young children, anxious kids, or extensive work, we offer:
- Nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) — for mild relaxation
- Oral sedation — for moderate anxiety
- IV sedation — for extensive procedures
- General anesthesia — for complex cases or very young children with multiple cavities
4. Removing the Decay
We use a small, quiet dental instrument (or for some cavities, air abrasion) to remove the decayed portion of the tooth. This is the most clinical part of the procedure — but with proper numbing, your child feels pressure or vibration at most.
5. Placing the Filling
- The tooth is cleaned and dried
- A bonding agent is applied
- Composite material is placed in layers, each hardened with a blue curing light
- The filling is shaped to match your child’s natural bite
- Final polish for a smooth finish
6. Celebrate and Send Home
A quick bite check, a balloon and prize, and we’re done. Most kids walk out with a smile — often a little numb, but proud.
Total chair time: typically 30–60 minutes per filling depending on size.
When a Filling Isn’t Enough
Sometimes decay has progressed past what a filling can safely restore. If the cavity has reached the nerve of the tooth, your child may need:
- Pulpotomy (baby root canal) — saves the tooth by removing only the infected pulp
- Pediatric crown — covers a tooth that’s too decayed to hold a filling
- Extraction — removes the tooth if it can’t be saved
We’ll always recommend the most conservative option that will work. Our goal is to save baby teeth when possible — they matter for eating, speech, and as placeholders for permanent teeth.
Preventing Future Cavities
Getting through a filling is great — but preventing the next one is even better. We’ll send your child home with:
- A home care review — brushing technique, flossing, age-appropriate toothpaste
- Diet guidance — which foods and drinks are harder on teeth
- Fluoride and sealant recommendations for high-risk areas
- Follow-up scheduling — cleanings every 6 months (or more often for higher-risk kids)
