What we use, and when

Two materials and a comfort plan, matched to the tooth and the child.

    Composite (tooth-colored)

    Bonded directly to the tooth, virtually invisible, and metal-free. Our standard for kids.

    Glass ionomer

    Tooth-colored option used in specific cases. Releases fluoride over time.

    Comfort options

    Nitrous, oral, or IV sedation available if your child needs a little extra help.

A cavity caught at a cleaning is usually a single short filling. Left longer, it can become a crown or a pulpotomy.

What happens during a filling visit?

About 30-45 minutes, and nothing starts before your child knows what is coming.

    Numbing gel first, then a slow injection most kids barely notice.

    Removing the decay

Do fillings hurt?
Not with proper numbing. Most kids feel some pressure or vibration during the procedure but no pain. For children who are anxious about the numbing injection itself, we offer nitrous oxide to help them relax.
How long do fillings last?
Tooth-colored composite fillings typically last 5–10 years with good oral hygiene. Some last decades. Baby tooth fillings only need to last until the tooth falls out naturally.
Will my child be numb after?
Yes, for 1–3 hours. We’ll warn your child (and you) not to bite the inside of their cheek or lip while numb. Soft foods only until sensation returns.
Can we eat after a filling?
Once numbness wears off — typically a couple of hours later. Start with soft foods; normal diet the next day.
Are silver (amalgam) fillings safe?
Yes, but we don’t use them — we prefer tooth-colored composite for its aesthetics and conservative tooth preparation. If you specifically want silver, let us know.
How much do fillings cost?
Most dental insurance covers fillings — typically at 70–80% after deductible. For self-pay, we offer transparent pricing. Learn about insurance and financing.
How do I know my child has a cavity?
Often, you don’t — small cavities are invisible to parents. We find them during routine exams with visual inspection, a small probe, and (when clinically needed) digital X-rays. This is why twice-yearly cleanings matter.
What if my child needs multiple fillings?
We’ll discuss options — whether to do them in a series of shorter appointments or combine them using sedation for a single, efficient visit.
