Deeper, Precisely Controlled Sedation — For Extensive Pediatric Dental Work

IV sedation — intravenous sedation — is a deeper level of pediatric dental sedation administered through a small IV line. It allows our clinical team to treat extensive dental needs in a single visit, with your child in a safe, sleep-like state throughout. It’s one of the reasons Dental Care Kids is a referral destination for families across Fairfield County whose kids need more than routine care.

1500 Summer Street, 2nd Floor, Stamford, CT 06905 | Call (203) 324-6171 to consult

What is IV Sedation?

IV sedation uses medication delivered directly into a vein, giving precise control over the depth and duration of sedation. Unlike oral sedation, which takes 30–45 minutes to work and can’t be easily adjusted, IV sedation takes effect within minutes and can be fine-tuned throughout the procedure.

Your child is typically in a deeply relaxed, sleep-like state — breathing on their own, with reflexes intact, but not consciously aware of the procedure. Most children have no memory of the treatment afterward.

IV sedation at Dental Care Kids is administered by a dental anesthesiologist or certified sedation provider with continuous monitoring throughout.

When IV Sedation is the Right Choice

  • Extensive dental treatment — multiple fillings, crowns, extractions, or pulpotomies in one visit
  • Severe dental anxiety — children for whom nitrous or oral sedation isn’t enough
  • Older children or teens who need definitive treatment without multiple appointments
  • Special needs patients who require deeper sedation for safety and comfort
  • Medically complex children where minimizing appointment count is a priority
  • Dental trauma requiring urgent extensive repair

IV sedation may not be the best fit for: - Very young children (typically under age 3 — general anesthesia is usually preferred) - Children with certain cardiac, respiratory, or neurological conditions — we’ll review medical history carefully - Cases that can be managed with lighter sedation (nitrous or oral sedation)

How IV Sedation Works at Dental Care Kids

Pre-Sedation Consultation

Before any IV sedation appointment, we hold a pre-sedation consult to:

  • Review full medical history, medications, and allergies
  • Discuss the proposed treatment and sedation plan
  • Answer questions from parents and (as appropriate) the child
  • Confirm pre-sedation fasting and medication instructions
  • Set expectations for the day of treatment

Before the Appointment

Strict fasting instructions: - No solid food for 8 hours before - Clear liquids OK up to 2 hours before — then nothing - Most medications should be taken as usual, unless we specify otherwise - Loose, comfortable clothing with sleeves that roll up - A parent or guardian must accompany your child and remain in the building

At the Appointment

  1. Arrival, vital signs, final review
  2. Your child is brought to the treatment room with a parent, if preferred
  3. A small numbing cream is applied to the IV site to minimize discomfort
  4. The IV line is placed — most kids feel a brief pinch and it’s done
  5. Sedation medication is introduced — onset within 1–3 minutes
  6. Once your child is safely sedated, treatment begins
  7. Continuous monitoring throughout: heart rate, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, respiration, ECG as appropriate
  8. Nitrous oxide may be used alongside IV sedation for additional comfort
  9. When treatment is complete, IV sedation is stopped and your child begins to wake
  10. Recovery in our monitored recovery area until fully alert

After the Appointment

  • Recovery time: 1–3 hours of drowsiness
  • Rest for the remainder of the day — no school, no sports, no strenuous activity
  • A parent must stay with your child through the evening
  • Soft diet for 24 hours, or as directed based on treatment performed
  • Detailed written instructions sent home — what’s normal, what’s not, who to call

Safety Protocols

IV sedation is a significant clinical undertaking, and safety is paramount. Our protocols include:

  • Board-certified dental anesthesiologist or certified sedation provider — trained and credentialed specifically for pediatric IV sedation
  • Pre-sedation medical clearance — including review with your child’s pediatrician for medically complex cases
  • Full monitoring equipment — pulse oximetry, blood pressure, ECG, capnography, continuous observation
  • Emergency preparedness — full code cart, reversal medications, advanced airway equipment, certified team
  • Licensed recovery staff monitoring your child until safe discharge
  • Written post-op instructions for parents with 24/7 call-in numbers

All protocols follow the combined guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Dental Association for deep sedation in children.

IV Sedation vs. General Anesthesia

Both are deep sedation options — here’s how they differ:

IV Sedation: - Your child breathes on their own - Reflexes intact - Performed in our fully equipped office - Recovery 1–3 hours

General Anesthesia: - Your child is fully asleep, may need breathing support - Deeper level of unconsciousness - Typically performed in a hospital or certified surgical facility - Recovery several hours, with longer monitoring

Your clinical team will recommend the right option based on treatment scope, your child’s medical profile, and age.

✓ Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IV sedation safe for kids?

Yes, when performed by certified specialists with proper monitoring. IV sedation has an excellent safety record in pediatric dentistry when protocols are followed. Your child will be continuously monitored throughout.

Will my child feel the IV being placed?

Numbing cream is applied first, and most kids feel only a brief pinch or nothing at all. For extremely anxious children, we may offer a small amount of oral sedation or nitrous first to relax before the IV goes in.

Will my child remember the procedure?

Most children have no memory of the treatment — IV sedation medications typically produce amnesia around the procedure.

Can I be in the room?

For IV sedation, parents usually wait in a nearby area during the active procedure — it’s a more controlled clinical environment. We’ll reunite you immediately after your child begins to wake. You’ll be involved in every decision before and after.

How long does recovery take?

Most children are alert enough to leave within 1–2 hours of waking, and fully back to normal by the next morning.

Will insurance cover IV sedation?

Often partially, especially when medically necessary. We’ll verify benefits, request pre-authorization where needed, and provide a cost estimate before treatment. CareCredit and Cherry financing are available.
